10 Online Resources to Help You Become a Quickbooks Expert in No Time

QuickBooks is an absolutely essential tool for small business owners or accountants looking to streamline their accounting and bookkeeping. But when you’re just getting started, you might feel a bit overwhelmed.

Don’t worry! I’ve got you covered. If you want to become a QuickBooks expert, a ton of resources are out there for you to take advantage of.

Below, I’ve pulled together a list of the best articles, resource centers, and podcasts to give you the knowledge and insight you need to become a QuickBooks expert.

Intuit’s Support Pages

Intuit’s support pages are some of the best in the business. There are users, experts, and Intuit employees willing and able to answer just about any questions you might have.

In fact, you might find yourself with more answers than you know what to do with—and one of them will probably be the perfect solution to your problem.

QBOShow

First things first: I’ve been hosting this live online program with my friend and colleague Woody Adams since 2010. Every Thursday evening from 5 to 6 p.m., we host a wide variety of guests and chat about everything from QuickBooks Online, Firm of the Future, and apps that can streamline your work so you can focus on what’s important.

We really drill into the new features available after upgrades to QuickBooks Online, why and how to get training, and generally how to do things—so you can become a QuickBooks expert.

Our listeners tend to be QuickBooks ProAdvisors and other industry professionals, but if you use QuickBooks, there will be something to interest you as well. We’ve compiled a great set of tips for you along with product comparisons, various setup cheat sheets, and more.

And don’t forget to check out our archives—there’s some great stuff like Attaching Docs and Adding Clients to Wholesale Billing, Source versus Target in QBO, and interviews with more guests than you can shake a stick at.

Woody’s QuickBooks Product Video Page

This retro-style page is a fantastic resource compiled by Adams and the other product specialists on his team: Valerie Heckman, Ryan Kelley, and Leah Hartman.

Don’t let the site’s looks deceive you—there’s some truly badass content (and Woody’s dry sense of humor!). There are tons of resources and how-to videos available, including basic information like QuickBooks to QuickBooks Online Best Practices and What You Need to Know, Wholesale Billing, and QuickBooks Self Employed. Everything on the site is free if you need a little boost to become a QuickBooks expert.

Real World Training—Mastering the Basics

Real World Training is a great site to give to your clients new to QuickBooks Online. RWT has always covered foundational education for QuickBooks Desktop, and they’ve recently partnered with Intuit to create a suite of courses for QuickBooks Online.

All the webinars last an hour and have such captivating titles as Get started in QuickBooks Online for former QuickBooks Desktop users; Tips, tricks, and answers for QuickBooks Online; as well as Money In: Customers and Sales; Money Out: Vendors and Expenses; and Accounting 101 if you need to refresh yourself on the basics. They even offer a Get started in QuickBooks Online Payroll webinar.

Intuit Blogs

Intuit’s done a great job crafting content that’s relevant to their users’ diverse needs. These blogs have great information for people at all different skill and knowledge levels.

  • The QuickBooks Resource Center offers basic small business advice, with multiple categories of information: Starting Up, Financial Services, Cash Flow, Accounting and Taxes, and Finance and Funding. This site is designed for any small business owner looking for information.
  • Need some help using QuickBooks? QuickBooks Accountant University offers free live webinars and in-person training courses to get you on your path to become a QuickBooks expert. While these are mostly aimed at accounting professionals, there are also resources for small businesses.
  • If you’re looking for basic QuickBooks information, check out the QuickBooks Blog. Their articles include bill pay instructions, QuickBooks quick tips, and forms. This blog is helpful for small business owners and accounting pros alike. And if free t-shirt contests are your thing, this blog can hook you up.
  • Tax pros can keep on top of the latest in tax legislation, how to manage client relationships, and ways to optimize their workflow at the Tax Pro Center. While the information on this site can be a bit on the technical side, the client and workflow content is great for anyone who needs a bit of advice.
  • If you’re looking for information about personal taxes—like how much of your kid’s summer camp is deductible, the place to go is the Turbotax Blog.

Social Media

While it sounds really casual, both Facebook and LinkedIn have fantastic communities focused on QuickBooks Online. These groups are a great place to both ask and answer questions. Just search for QuickBooks Online or QBO on either platform, and join the group for which you feel most suited—while some groups have open membership, most require approval. Requests are usually accepted. and as long as you stay on topic, you’ll stay a member.
