Meet the Creative Small Business Owner Getting Paid to Do What She Loves

The Story of The Waxwing from Blackbox Visual on Vimeo

Steph Davies wears many hats: She’s a freelance illustrator, a new mom, and a small business owner. She’s also an advocate for other artists and creative entrepreneurs in her community, helping them build word-of-mouth and attract more business via her shop, The Waxwing.

The Waxwing is an artists’ consignment shop based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It showcases the work of designers, jewelry makers, ceramicists, and other talented craftspeople, all curated by Davies. Her eye for beauty has turned The Waxwing into a thriving business where shoppers can discover one-of-a-kind handmade goods and fall in love with local creators.

In addition to helping artists with pricing, Davies also helps first-time sellers package and market their work. Davies is passionate about educating new vendors on the business of being an artist so that, in her words, everyone in her community can “get paid to do what we love.”

Davies is also a new mom, which she confesses has been challenging. “I’m still figuring it out,” she says. Luckily, her team at The Waxwing has become an invaluable support system, and working for herself has provided a freedom and flexibility a more traditional job couldn’t afford. “I feel myself starting to make sense of it all,” she says.

When asked if she has any regrets about starting her small business, Davies’s answer is simple: “I just wish I’d done it sooner. I don’t know how I’d ever go back to working for someone else. It’s really a nice freedom to just come here and be.”
