Get Inspired by This Artist’s Beautiful Small Business [Video]

Nearly two million independent creators conduct business through Etsy, the largest online marketplace of its kind. One of those proud creators is Xenobia Bailey, a fiber artist who turns found objects into one-of-a-kind works of art.

As a student studying industrial design, Xenobia wasn’t thrilled by the idea of a conventional career churning out mainstream designs—in her own words, “I didn’t want to surrender my principles.” Instead, she took inspiration from an aesthetic beloved by generations of women in her family: the visual world of funk.

Xenobia takes everything from magazine clippings to recycled yarn and creates impressive sculptures, prints, clothes, and wearable art. Using found materials and objects considered by many to be “trash,” she recreates the bold patterns and high-contrast colors of the funk aesthetic. Standing next to one of her sculptures, she explains, “I took trash and I gave it value. This is my message to the community.”
