Meet the Small Business Keeping Detroit on the Move

Back in 2012, after years of deliberation, the city of Detroit announced it was abandoning its plans for a light rail—a much-needed system that would have connected downtown to Detroit’s suburbs. What do you do when your city’s public transportation leaves you high and dry? If you’re Andy Didorosi, you build your own.

Like many of his fellow Detroit natives, Andy had eagerly awaited the light rail and the renewal it would bring to the city. When the bad news broke, he says, “I was furious.” Out of that anger came a radical idea: “I said, ‘You know, what screw it. I’m going to do it myself. I’m going to send buses up this corridor.’” The Detroit Bus Company was born.

Andy’s fleet of colorful buses provide a valuable service to his neighbors and proves to the city just how badly its residents need a comprehensive transit system. Since the DBC’s first ride, the Detroit Department of Transportation has responded to pressure to innovate and improve. Andy hopes that momentum will continue, allowing his project to remain a small but influential feature of his beloved hometown.

“We will keep working in Detroit to fill the niches that are going unfulfilled, the people that are going unnoticed,” he says, “And do our absolute best to get people moved in the city—to put the city back on wheels.”
Check out the video to hear more about the DBC’s amazing origins, and to get a glimpse of its one-of-a-kind buses.
